The country side around Fillmore (Township 9, 10, 11) was
first surveyed in 1882 – 1883 by F.W. Armstrong and J.A. Maddock. Alex MacLean
has the distinction of being the first settler arriving in the spring of 1901.
In 1902, the railway survey from Arcola was made. On November 9, 1904 the
railway from Stoughton to Regina was in operation and at that time was the
longest piece of straight track in the world. In later years, it was known as
the longest straight track in North America. This piece of track is still in use
today.
In 1903, three stores were opened near the present town site, Alex MacLean
opened a general store, and H. Golding opened a hardware store and an implement
business.
The town was surveyed that fall and the businesses moved to the present Main
Street.
The original hotel, pharmacy and café are still standing and in operation today
with the exception of the café which ceased to operate in 2001.
