Arcola has had the unique experience of having a major motion picture filmed here using local buildings, landscape and a cast largely drawn from the community itself. “Who Has Seen the Wind” was filmed in 1976 and was based on the coming of age of a boy in a prairie town during the depression. Souris River Films Ltd. chose Arcola because of the well-preserved heritage buildings, many of which are still in use .
The oil industry plays a large part in the local economy along with mixed farming including grains, cattle, horses and sheep. Arcola has an accredited hospital which is a large employer in the area and provides excellent medical care to the residents of Arcola and area. The Arcola Fair is held annually on the third Saturday of June. The event includes a pancake breakfast, parade, light horse show, classy lassie and jackpot steer cattle show, ball, children's entertainment, musical entertainment, supper, and more. On the last weekend of January, the Arcola Optimists organize a Poker Derby. Activities include a scenic ride through the Moose Mountains or an optional flatland trail, snow drags, cabaret and dance, snowmobiles raffle and other valuable rider check point prizes. In 2007 the Optimist Rally had more than 500 riders. Recreation facilities include a new community hall built in 1995 which has a seating capacity of 400 persons, skating rink with artificial ice, curling club with 3 sheets of artificial ice, new public library, theatre, museum, ball diamonds, running track and RV facilities. Arcola School has an enrollment of more than 200 students. The school is very modern, being totally renovated in 1991 and in 1995 the addition of a new computer science program complete with new computers. There is a community Playschool for three and four year olds. The Arcola Day Care Centre is available for children aged 18 months to 12 years.
The Town of Arcola is a member of the Cornerstone Regional Economic Development Authority. Cornerstone REDA can provide new or existing businesses with start up or expansion loans. Serviced lots for residential or business construction are available at a very reasonable cost. The Town has a partial tax exemption available over a three year period to help new businesses get established. Arcola is a small town where the emphasis is still on the quality of life. The Town is always clean and all the streets are paved. With the Moose Mountains lying just to the north giving us a beautiful view, Arcola is a good community to raise a family, retire or just come for a visit. Come visit the sunny side of the Moose Mountains! We like it - so would you! |
